About Valsad District (Gujarat)

The Valsad district is a district of Gujarat with its administrative headquarters located at Valsad city. The district got its name 'Valsad' from the Gujarati term vad-saal meaning "hampered (saal) by banyan trees (vad)". Earlier, the place was full of Banyan trees. For the first time Parsians were entered in India through the Sanjan port. The district has Mount Parnera which is an abode of many notable temples and Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj fort. The district came into existence in the year 1966.

Nirupa Roy, an illustrious Indian actress and the person mostly known for portraying character roles of the Indian mother was born on 4th January, 1931 at Valsad city. She was popular as the "queen of misery" in the whole film industry of that time. She was also honoured by the prestigious Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.

Geographically, the district lies at 20°61'N latitude, 72°93'E longitude and 13 m Altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 33.00% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 3,008 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 21st in the state and 393rd in India. It is bounded by Navsari district on the north, Maharashtra state on the south, Dang district on the east and Arabian Sea on the west. The climate of the district remains extremely hot during the summer. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 2666.7 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 6 Talukas namely Valsad, Pardi, Vapi, Dharampur, Kaprada and Umbergaon. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 7 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 28 towns and 434 villages. The administrative language in the district is Gujarati.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 17,05,678 including 8,87,222 are males and 8,18,456 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 922 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 20.92% out of which 20.74% were males and 21.12% were females. The population density in the district is 567 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 30,728 out of which 15,855 were males and 14,872 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 15,218 out of which 9,024 were males and 6,194 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 92.11% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Gujarati and Bhili/Bhilodi with 70.83% and 11.01%.

The economy of the Valsad district is mainly dependent on industrial sectors such as chemicals, textiles, and paper and pulp industries. The development of the industries in the district increases its employment facilities. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy to a great extent. There are also numerous small scale industries in the district. One can found several prominent private industries in the district namely Alok Industries Ltd, Wyeth, Welspun India Ltd., Aarti Industries, Atul Limited, Gujarat Heavy Chemicals Ltd. (GHCL), Raymond, Sun Pharmaceuticals, United Phosphorus, Pidilite, Polyols & Polymers and Vadilal Unique Polymers. The district is famous as a horticulture hub in the Gujarat state. Some of its population are as well engaged in the agricultural field in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are mango, cucurbits, banana, sugarcane, etc. In the production of cucurbits, the district occupies the second highest position in the state. Another economic activity generally observed in the district is its tourism.

The district is an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides platform for higher education. The Government Polytechnic, one of the recognised educational institutions in the district was established in 1965. Since 2004 Government Engineering College imparts education in different branches of engineering. The two other vital institutions in the district are G.M. Bilakhia Pharmacy College and Rofel Institute of Management Studies. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 78.55% including 84.55% are males and 72.06% are females.

Morarji Desai, a distinguished Indian independence activist and the Prime Minister of India from 1977 to 1979 was born on 29th February, 1896 at Bhadeli in the district. He was also the first non-Congress Prime Minister of India. He held many important portfolios in the Government of India likewise Chief Minister of Bombay State, Home Minister, Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India.

The district has quite a few centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. The Fire Temple, situated at Udawada in the district was constructed in the year 1742. It is also popularly known as Mecca among the Parsi community in India which helps to make the place a famous religious centre throughout the world. Dharampur, surrounded by Sahyadri Mountains on its three sides provides its visitors a pleasant climate throughout the year. Lady Wilson Museum, located at Dharampur in the district has a great collection of tribal unique art and crafts that depicts their culture.
