About Serchhip District (Mizoram)

Serchhip district is a district of Mizoram state with its administrative headquarters located at Serchhip town. The present district Serchhip is named after the citrus trees that found on top of the first hill of the then village of Serchhip. The name of the district is a blend of two words i.e. Ser and chhip which meaning is 'citrus-on-top'. Furthermore, the territory of the earlier Serchhip village is now included in the New Serchhip and Chhiahtlang villages. For the first time Lallula, a Mizo chief set up a settlement at Kawlri within the area of Serchhip. Then one day, a horrible incident was occurred when Lallula massacred Thlanrawn Pawi at Zopui. After this incident, in afraid of revenge from Thlanrawn, he fled towards Artahkawn to Lunglei Zobawk. Later, he shifted towards North and finally reached Kawlri in the Serchhip village. Secondly, it was Bengkhuaia, son of Lalpuithanga, chief of Bawngchawm and a great Mizo chief who setup a settlement at Serchhip. Serchhip was emerged as a separate district in the map of Mizoram state in the year 1999.

Geographically, the district lies at 23°31' N latitude and 92°86' E longitude. The altitude in the district is 888 m. In the year 2021, there was a total 80.47% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 1,421sq km. and it bounded by Aizawl district on the North and North West, Lunglei district, Champhai district on the East and Mamit district on the West. The principal rivers in the district are Mat and Tuikum. The climate of the district remains pleasant throughout the year. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The rainfall here is moderate. The actual rainfall in the district was 1470.9 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 sub-divisions namely Serchhip Sadar, North Vanlaiphai and Thenzawl. Moreover, it comprises 3 towns and 40 villages. There are total three legislative assembly constituencies in the district such as Tuikum, Hrangturzo and Serchhip. The administrative language in the district is Mizo. Some major towns in the district are Serchhip, Thenzawl and North Vanlaiphai. In the same way some notable villages here include Hriangtlang and Lungpho.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 64,937 out of which 32,851 are males and 32,086 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 977 (females per 1000 males) and child ratio of 949 (females per 1000 males). During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 20.56% including 19.98% were males and 21.17% were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Christian with 97.70% of the total population. The population density in the district is 46 (persons per sq. km.). As per 2011 census the principal language in the district is Lushai/Mizo with 97.75%. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 728 out of which 365 were males and 363 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 342 out of which 232 were males and 110 were females.

The economy of the district is mainly dependent on agricultural activities. More than half of its population are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are paddy, maize, sweet corn, cabbage, etc. Since it is situated near Mat river valley hence it is famous as the main producer of cash crops in Mizoram state. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from the agricultural products in the district helps in its economy to a great extent. But the district is scantily industrialised. In the year 2005-06 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 16,690 lakhs at current price and Rs. 12,752 lakhs at constant prices in the year 1999-2000. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2005-06 was Rs. 14,956 lakh at current price and Rs. 11,329 lakh at constant prices in the year 1999-2000. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2005-06 was Rs. 25,742 at current price and Rs. 581 at constant prices in the year 1999-2000.

The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. In the whole Serchhip town, Serchhip College is the only centre of higher education. It is one of the foremost colleges in Mizoram state, established on 25th August, 1973 which at present offers various courses of Arts, Science and Computer streams. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 97.91% out of which 98.28% are males and 97.53% are females. The literate population in the district is 54,476 including 27,598 are males and 26,878 are females. The illiterate population in the district is 10,461 including 5,253 are males and 5,208 are females.

The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Vantawng Khawhthla, the most famous waterfall is located about 4 km. towards the southern part of Thenzawl at Lau River. The water of this waterfall falls from a height of about 220 m. The natives of the district believe that once upon a time there was a great swimmer named Vantawnga, who supposed to have lived in a nearby village and use to swim upwards to the falls when the volume of the water was at its peak. One day when the people of Ngawidawh urged him to swim upwards of the falls, at that time a large log carried by the flood hit him and he died at the spot. Therefore, the people of the place named it after him. Zoluti Hriatrengna Lung, in the district is a perfect destination for historians since it is associated with many prominent historical events. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Thenzawl, Vantawng Khawhthla Waterfall, Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary, Chhingpuii Thlan, Zoluti Hriatrengna Lung and many more.
