Kamrup Metropolitan district is a district of the Assam state with its administrative headquarters located at Guwahati city. Kamrup Metro was emerged as a separate district on 3rd February, 2003 after bifurcating from the old Kamrup district. Once upon a time the place was popularly known as Pragjyotishpur meaning the light of the East. On the other hand, its headquarters city, Guwahati got its name from the Assamese words i.e. “Guwa” means areca nut and “Haat” means market. An interesting mythological story is associated with the past of the district. It is believe that long years back there was a demon king named, Narakasura and it is said to have built this ancient city. The name Pragjyotishpur also frequently mentioned in the great epics of Mahabharata and other mythology as the astrology (Jyotish Shashtra) practices that prevailed in this part of the country during that period of time. Yet, "Kamrup" became a more predominant name in the later part of the history. Numerous interesting stories are associated with the naming of this place "Kamrup". Once the district was situated in the midway between two the most powerful kingdoms of Assam likewise the Ahoms and the Koch. At that time neither Mughals nor the Koch was able to maintain their rule at Guwahati but the Borphukan, the civil and military authority appointed by the Ahom King controlled the region in a better way.

Prof. Bhabananda Deka, an illustrious Assamese economist and author who conducted path-breaking research for the very first time on the economy of the far eastern part of India was born on 19th August, 1929 in the district. During the mid-20th century he was also a leading Indian-Assamese litterateur of the famed 'Awahon-Ramdhenu Era' of Assamese literature.

Geographically, the district lies at 26°08'N latitude and 91°64'E longitude. The altitude in the district is 171 m. In the year 2021, there was a total 48.46% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 955 sq km. and it is bounded by Darrang district and Kamrup district on the North, Meghalaya and Kamrup district on the South, Marigaon district on the East and Kamrup district on the West. The principal river that flows through the district is Brahmaputra River. The climate of the district can be characterised as sub tropical with semi-dry summer & cold in winter. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1150.8 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district has only one sub-division namely Guwahati Sadar. It comprises 6 revenue circles likewise Sonapur Gaon, Chandrapur Bagicha, Dispur, Guwahati, Azara and North Guwahati. Moreover, the district is divided into 6 sub-districts, 12 towns and 216 villages. The administrative languages in the district are Assamese and English.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 12,53,938 including 6,47,585 are males and 6,06,353 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 936 (females for every 1000 males) and child ratio of 946 (females per 1000 males). As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 84.89% of the total population. The population density in the district is 1,313 (persons per sq. km.). During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 26.94% including 21.26% were males and 33.63% were females. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Assamese and Bengali with 57.87% and 20.56%. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 43,782 out of which 23,660 were males and 20,122 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 17,235 out of which 9,833 were males and 7,402 were females.

The economy of the district is mainly dependent on both the agricultural and industrial sector. More than half of its population are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are wheat, paddy, coconut, sugarcane, orange, pineapple, lemon, coconut, etc. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from the agricultural products in the district helps in its economy to a great extent. Industrially, also the district is quite well developed. There are two most important tea estates in the district namely Sonapur Tea Estate and Sunchali Tea Estate. The district is fortunate enough to have the Guwahati Refinery, the first public sector refinery in India inaugurated on 1st January, 1962 which contributes in its economy remarkably. In the year 2018-19 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 32,09,136 lakhs at current price and Rs. 23,61,342 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2007-08 was Rs. 4,41,670 lakh at current price and Rs. 3,51,607 lakh at constant prices in the year 1999-2000. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2018-19 was Rs. 1,78,287 at current price and Rs. 1,21,246 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its most recognised educational institutions in the district are Gauhati University, Cotton College, Handique Girls College, Lalit Chandra Bharali College, Indian Institute of Technology, Assam Engineering College, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Assam Engineering Institute and many more. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 88.71% including 92.13% are males and 85.07% are females. The district has a literate population of 10,01,191 including 5,37,227 are males and 4,63,964 are females. The district has a illiterate population of 2,52,747 including 1,10,358 are males and 1,42,389 are females.

The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Aswaklanta, a small hill lying on the North Bank of the Brahmaputra River is located in the district. This hill has two Vishnu temples such as Kurmayanardan and Anantasayi-Vishnu. Pilgrims from far distance place come to these temples in order to offer their prayers. Balaji temple, situated at Lokhra near the district has been constructed in the South Indian temple style. The deities of Lord Ganesha, Lord Balaji and Goddess Durga are present in the district. A beautiful park is also located near to the temple. Umananda temple is located in one of the three islands named Umananda (Peacock Island) in the midst of the Brahmaputra River. Moreover, the island of Umananda has two more beautiful temples namely Chandrshekhar and Hargauri with some antique rock cut sculptures and carvings. Srimanta Sankardev Kalashetra, a unique cultural complex is situated at Panjabari in the district. Kalashetra includes Sahitya and Sangeet Natak Bhawan, Lalit Lala Bhawan, Heritage Park, Cultural Museum, Open Air Theatre, etc. Some other notable places of interest in the district are State zoo-cum-Botanical garden, Guwahati Planetrium, Navagraha temple, Nilachal Hill, Basistha Temple, Digholi Pukhuri, Guwahati Refinery, Nehru Stadium, etc.
