About New Delhi District (Delhi)

New Delhi district is a district of the National Capital Territory, Delhi in India with its administrative headquarters located at Connaught Place. The place was founded by George V, Emperor of India during the period of Delhi Durbar of 1911. The entire region was planned by the two British architects named Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. This new capital of British India was inaugurated for the first time on 13th February, 1931 by Viceroy and Governor-General of India, Lord Irwin. Although colloquially Delhi and New Delhi as names are used interchangeably to refer to the jurisdiction of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, these are two distinct entities, and the latter is a small part of the former. New Delhi was emerged a separate district in the year 1996.

Geographically, the district lies at 28064'N latitude and 77022'E longitude. The altitude in the district is 216 m. In the year 2019, there was a total 47.06% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 35 sq km. Since the place is located on the Indo-Gangetic Plain hence there is little difference in elevation across the city. Earlier, New Delhi and its nearby areas were a part of the Aravali Range; all the left out parts of that mountain range is named Delhi Ridge, which is popularly known as the Lungs of Delhi. It is a landlocked city as it lies on the floodplains of the Yamuna River. This reason is under the seismic zone-IV since it is vulnerable to earthquakes. The principal river in the district is Yamuna River. The climate of the district remains extremely hot and humid in the summer and fairly cold in the winter. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 696.4 mm in the year of 2018-19.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 sub-districts and 1 town. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 1,42,004 including 77,942 are males and 64,062 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 822 (females for every 1000 males). In the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was -20.72% including -22.02% are males and -19.07% are females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 87.66% of the total population. The population density in the district is 4,057 (persons per sq. km.). As per 2001 census the principal languages in the district are Hindi with 81.36%. The major schedule caste population in the district is Chuhra (Balmiki) with 47.59% of the total population.

The economy of the district is mainly dependent on industrial sector. New Delhi is the largest commercial city in northern India. Connaught Place in the district is one of the North India's largest commercial and financial centres. Some of the nearby major commercial centres are Barakhamba Road, ITO, etc. The prominent employers in the district are Government and quasi government sector. Many multinational companies in the district are attracted by its skilled labour and English-speaking workforce. The most significant service industries in the district include information technology, telecommunications, hotels, banking, media and tourism.

The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of the most recognised educational institutions in the district are AJK, Mass Communication Research Centre, Amity Law School, Apeejay Institute of Design, Bhaskraycharya College of Applied Sciences, Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, Ch. Brahm Prakash Government Engineering College, College of Vocational Studies, Delhi College of Engineering, Ambedkar Institute of Technology, Govind Ballabh Pant Engineering College, Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology, National Power Training Institute, New Delhi Institute of Management, UEI Global, University School of Biotechnology and many more. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 88.34% out of which 92.24% are males and 83.56% are females. The total literate population in the district is 1,14,179 including 65,678 are males and 48,501 are females. The total illiterate population in the district is 27,825 including 12,264 are males and 15,561 are females.

The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Jantar Mantar, located at Connaught Place in New Dehi was one of the creation of Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur which consists of 13 architectural astronomy instruments. The primary purpose of the observatory was to compile astronomical tables and to predict the times and movements of the sun, moon and planets. Gandhi Smriti, situated in New Delhi is the place where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life and it is the place where he was assassinated on 30th January, 1948. On the other hand, Rajghat in New Delhi is the place where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated on 31st January, 1948 after assassination and his ashes were buried in this place and make it his final resting place on the bank of the Yamuna River. India Gate, built in 1931 is the national monument of India commemorating the 90,000 soldiers of the Indian Army who lost their lives in World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War while fighting for the British Government. It was inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum, National Gallery of Modern Art, National Museum of Natural History, National Rail Museum, National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum, National Philatelic Museum, Nehru Planetarium, Shankar's International Dolls Museum and many more.

Captain Anuj Nayyar, MVC, an illustrious Indian Army officer of 17 Jat was born on 28th August, 1975 in New Delhi. The government of India honoured him with the India's second highest gallantry award, the Maha Vir Chakra for exemplary valour during operations in the Kargil War in 1999. Subodh Markandeya, a senior Indian lawyer, author and judicial activist was born on 24th July, 1937 in New Delhi. At the initial period of his career he practices at the Supreme Court of India but also practices in various High Courts. He has served as the standing counsel for Government of India, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), State of Uttar Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh Financial Corporation (UPFC), Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Board (U.P.S.E.B.), Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam and numerous Developmental Authorities.
