About Rohtak District (Haryana)
Historically, the region was founded by Rajput king called Raja Rohtash Singh Parmara. The area was named as Rohtashgarh after him. But with the course of time it was changed to Rohtak. According to the Michael Witzel, the name of the region may have derived from a well known tree of the area namely Rohitaka. The place is also mentioned in the Vedas and the great epic, Mahabharata. The region is believed to be as old as the Indus valley civilization. Khokhar Jat, Khushana, Yadhyayas and Guptas ruled this region during different periods of time. Some coins of the Hindus King of Kabul named ‘Samanta Deva’ are also founded here.
Deepak Nivas Hooda is an Indian Kabaddi player and a member of the Indian team in the 2016 South Asian Games as well. At that time the Indian Kabaddi team won the gold medal. He was actively participated in the first three seasons of the Pro Kabaddi League. Satyawart Kadian is an Indian wrestler who represented India at the inaugural 2010 Youth Olympics and won a bronze medal. He also participated in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and won a silver medal.
Geographically, the district has a total 1,745 sq. km. area and occupies the rank 12th in State and 521st in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 28°89'N latitude, 76°59'E longitude and 223 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 1.17% forest area of total geographical area. It is bounded by Jind and Sonipat districts on the North, Jhajjar and Sonipat districts on the East, and Hissar, Sirsa, and Bhiwani districts on the West. The climate of the district is extremely hot in the summers and fairly cold in the winters. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 705.7 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 sub-districts, 5 towns and 143 villages. Hindi is its official language. The administrative headquarters n the district is located at Rohtak which is situated at a distance of 240 kms from the State Capital.
Demographically, according to the 2011 census, the district has a total number of 2,02,933 households with a total of 10,61,204 including 5,68,479 are males and 4,92,725 are females and causing it to rank 14th in the state and 430th in India. The density of population of the district is 608 persons per sq. km. The sex ratio is pegged at 867 females for every 1000 males while the child ratio stands at 820 females per 1000 males. The schedule caste population of the district is recorded as 2,16,889 out of which 1,15,573 are males, and 1,01,316 are females. The population growth rate during the period 2001 to 2011 was 12.88% including 11.68% were males and 14.30% were females. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 26,801 out of which 14,111 were males and 12,688 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 15,062 out of which 9,723 were males and 5,338 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 98.37% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 95.56%.
Economically, the district is mainly dependent on industries as well as agriculture. Small scale and cottage industries are also available here. The district has made a record as the largest producer of screw in the world. The district also has dairies and sugar mills. Big industries and commercial offices are included in Japanese township in the district. Textile and Gold Jewellery making industries can be founded on the regional level. The GDDP or Gross District Domestic Product during the period 2005-06 was Rs. 3,36,510 lakh at current price and Rs. 2,65,930 lakh at constant prices during the period 1999-2000. The NDDP, or Net District Domestic Product during the period 2005-06 was Rs. 3,07,444 lakh at current price and Rs. 2,45,772 lakh at constant prices during the period 1999-2000. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, at factor cost during the period 2011-12 was Rs. 79,002 lakh at current price during the period 2004-2005.
Education wise, according to the 2011 census, the literacy rate in the district is 80.22% including 87.65% are males and 71.72% are females. The total literate population of the district is 7,47,582 including 4,36,025 are males and 3,11,557 are females. The two recognized educational institutions in the district are Indian Institute of Management (established in 2010) and Maharishi Dayanand University (established in 1976). Bhupinder Singh Hooda is a famous Indian politician and leader belongs to the Indian National Congress. He was the Chief Minister of Haryana from 2004 to 2014. Hansraj Bhardwaj is an Indian politician from Indian National Congress party. He is the Governor of Karnataka since 2009. He has served as Governor of Kerala in 2012-13. He held the position of the minister of state for nine years and a cabinet minister for law and justice for five years. He became the additional charge of Governor of Kerala in 2012. Manohar Lal Khattar is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is the Chief Minister of Haryana state in India.
The district belongs to the several famous historical and religious paces to visit. These places are historical sites of Farmana and Khokhrakot, Asthal Bohar, Meham, Shahjahan ki Baoli, Tilyar Convention Centre. In the year 2020-2021, there were total 24,650 domestic tourists and 18 foreign tourists who visited the above places. Ancient sites of Farmana Khas or Daksh Khera and Khokhrakot are archaeological site associated with the Harappan period. Shahjahan ki Baoli is famous as Choron ki baoli. It is the finest monument in Haryana. It was built by Saidu Kala in 1658-59 AD who was a chobdar of Emperor Shah Jahan. It is basically a water reservoir.
