Hyderabad district is a disrict of Telangana state with its administrative headquarters located at Hyderabad city. The district Hyderabad got its name from the two Urdu and Persian words haydar meaning “lion” and abad meaning “city or abode”. Both the terms together means “the lion city”. There are also many other interesting stories associated with the name of the district “Hyderabad”. After police action, the Atraf-a-Balda district and Baghat district was merged and formed the Hyderabad district in 1948. Then after formation of Andhra Pradesh by merging Telugu speaking of Hyderabad state in the year 1956, Hyderabad district boundary was altered Tandur Taluka which is telugu speaking region of Gulbarga district was merged in Hyderabad district and Parigi Taluka of Mahabubnagar district and Vikarabad Taluka of Medak District also merged in the Hyderabad district. Later in 1978 the district was divided into two parts namely Hyderabad Urban district and Hyderabad Rural district. With the passage of time, Hyderabad rural district was renamed as Ranga Reddy district on the other hand Hyderbad Urban district is the present Hyderabad district.

Satya Narayana Nadella, an eminent Indian-American business executive and the current Chief executive officer (CEO) of Microsoft was born on 19th August, 1967 in Hyderabad. Earlier, he was served as the Executive Vice President of Microsoft's Cloud and Enterprise group. Sayyid Ahmedullah Qadri also popularly known as Lisan-ul-Mulk, a prominent writer, author, critic, editor-in-chief, Indian independence activist and a most admired figure of Hyderabad was born on 9th August, 1909 in Hyderabad. He was also served as the president of Lutfuddaulah Oriental Research Institute in Hyderabad. He was honoured by the great Padma Shri Award in 1966 for his contribution in the field of literature and education.

Geographically, the district lies at 17°41' N latitude, 78°53' E longitude and 542 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 8.29% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 217 sq km. and it is bounded by Medak district on the north, Mahabubnagar district on the south, Nalgonda district on the east and Karnataka on the west. The climate of the district is characterized as tropical wet and dry climate. Its summers are very hot and humid. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1101.2 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 16 tehsils includes Amberpeth, Ameerpet, Asifnagar, Bahadurpura, Bandlaguda, Charminar, Golconda, Himayatnagar, Khairtabad, Marredpally, Musheerabad, Nampally, Saidabad, Secunderabad, Shaikpet and Trimulgherry. There are 2 Lok Sabha and 18 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 3 towns. The administrative headquarters of the district is located at Hyderabad city. The administrative language in the district is Telugu.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 39,43,323 out of which 20,18,575 are males and 19,24,748 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 954 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 2.97% including 1.89% were males and 4.12% were females. As per 2011 census the major religions in the district are Hindu and Muslim with 55.41% and 41.17% of the total population. The population density in the district is 18,172 persons per sq. km. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Telugu and Urdu with 43.35% and 43.24%. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 1,83,578 out of which 93,889 were males and 89,689 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 43,423 out of which 22,436 were males and 20,987 were females.

Hyderabad is popularly known as the Pearl City. It is also one of the chief global trading centres of large diamonds. The district is industrially well developed and it has many notable enterprises such as Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), Bharat Electronics (BEL), Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) and Andhra Bank (AB). Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these enterprises. In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 1,62,87,737 lakhs at current price and Rs. 1,05,95,867 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2015-16 was Rs. 1,25,49,816 lakh at current price and Rs. 1,00,72,461 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 3,51,332 at current price and Rs. 2,24,834 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.

Hyderabad provides a platform for higher education. Osmania University, the first university in Hyderabad was established in 1918 and one of the most famous institutions of India for international students. The district is fortunate enough to have India’s first distance learning Open University i.e. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University, established in 1982. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 83.25% out of which 86.99% are males and 79.35% are females. The total number of literates in the district is 28,92,155 including 15,42,688 are males and 13,49,467 are females.

Zakir Husain, the 3rd President of India 13th May, 1967-3rd May, 1969) was born on 8th February 1897, in Hyderabad. Earlier he was served as Governor of Bihar (1957-1962) and as the Vice President of India (1962-1967). He was also honoured by the Bharat Ratna Award in the year 1963. Asaduddin Owaisi, a distinguished Indian politician, President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and the member of 16th Lok Sabha was born on 13th May 1969 in Hyderabad. He was honoured by Sansad Ratna Award for his overall best performance in 15th Lok Sabha in 2014.

Hyderabad offers a variety of tourist places like heritage monuments, lakes, parks, museums and many more which allures numerous travellers from across the world. The Charminar is the identity of Hyderabad which was built by the founder of Hyderabad i.e. Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah in 1591 at the heart of the Hyderabad city. Mecca Masjid, situated at a distance of a two hundred yards southwest of the Charminar and it was so named because its bricks were brought from Mecca. It was started by Qutb Shahis but was completed by Aurangzeb in 1694. Golconda fort is an extraordinary fort which derived its name from the Telugu terms “Golla Konda” meaning “Shepherd’s Hill”. Taramati Baradari, located at Ibrahimbagh, on the Osman Sagar (Gandipet) road is a heritage monument constructed by the Seventh Sultan of Golconda. Some other well known centres of attraction of the district are Birla Mandir, Salar Jung Museum, AP State Archaeological Museum, Nehru Zoological Park, Hussainsagar Lake, Nizam’s Silver Jubilee Museum, Chow Mohalla Palace, etc.
